Statistics to go!

In September SILEX has been installed in the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia.

Also in September, on the 1405 downloads, 141 installations have been made online and about 400 on local computer. For the online websites: Europe 60% – North America 30% – (27% France – 26% USA)

Over 30% of these installations have been made by webdesign agencies.

In October SILEX has been downloaded 2454 times, 75% increase as of September and 173% increase as of August.

Toujours en septembre, sur les 1405 téléchargements, il y a eu 141 installations en ligne et environ 400 en local. Pour les installations en ligne, la répartition est :
- Europe 60 % / Amérique du Nord 30 %
- France 27 % / USA 26 %

Plus de 30% de ces installations sont faites par des agences de webdesign.

En octobre il y a eu 2454 téléchargements soit une augmentation de 75% par rapport à septembre et une augmentation de 173% par rapport à août.

Following up on the release of Adobe CS4 and the Flash 10 “Astro” beta, a great resource for Open Source developers is the OSFlash website, which hosts a large number of ongoing development projects. The site includes Flash IDE alternatives, such as the excellent online authoring environment built in Ajax at Antimatter that allows you to create Animated GIFs, SWF (Flash), SVG Animations, and other formats for free. The site is definitely worth a look at:

There are numerous projects involving command line tools, compilers, and format converters at OSFlash, as well as Eclipse plug-ins, ActionScript libraries, and frameworks for Flex, Flash, and ActionScript. To see the full list, including Flash applications and utilities, visit:

One of the more interesting applications is SILEX, an Open Source Flash CMS which is described as a “mix between editing software and wiki software”. The software allows you to use a WYSIWYG editor to produce complete Flash websites for Flash 7,8, & 9 as well as rich internet and touch screen applications. It also has built in SEO features and multi-lingual support. If you are looking for a complete framework for developing new Flash sites, SILEX is definitely a good place to start.

For video chat and video conferencing using Flash Media Server, there are two excellent plug-ins called FlashVid available at:

These include Video Publish and Video Receive with streaming, volume control, bandwidth settings, user identification, and picture quality controls among other settings and configurations. An example of these plug-ins in action can be found at:

Animation Package is “an ActionScript library compatible to Flash Player 6 and above. It helps you to create powerful, maintainable animations and primitive shapes in an efficient and easy way, resulting in small file sizes.” The package is available in versions designed for Flash 6, 8, & 9 and can be downloaded at this site:

FlashDevelop is an ActionScript 2 & 3 library and development environment compatible with both Flash and Flex. It also supports Swfmill and Mtasc integration with tools for authoring, debugging, and documentation. More information on this project, with links to the Sourceforge files, can be found at:

Gaia is another Rich Internet Application framework which promises to reduce your authoring time for Flash websites to 10 minutes! It uses Agile methods to streamline development, automates repetitive tasks, and has built in libraries of animations, as well as SEO enhancements. The download page for Gaia is found at:

While these examples represent only a fraction of the projects hosted at OSFlash, they are good examples of the advances and innovations in Open Source Software being made within the Flash & Flex development platforms. OSFlash – Open Source Flash Development

One of the best articles on web development I have read lately is an interview with Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch at eWeek. Since merging with Macromedia, Adobe has continued to release new software and innovations at a rate that is difficult for most designers to keep up with. The interview covers subjects ranging from Adobe’s main product line, competition with Google & Microsoft, and Open Source development related to the company’s services. Lynch speaks at length about Adobe Air and the advances it is enabling in cloud computing, as well as a new product named Thermo, which looks to make user interface design more creative and simple. Adobe Creative Suite – CS4:

Lynch calls CS4 “the biggest software release we’ve done in our history of 25 years in business.” The package brings together all of Adobe’s core software packages: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Premier, Illustrator, Fireworks, AfterEffects, Acrobat, Encore, SoundBooth, and many others, packaging them in various suites for office, development, and production studios. They have also included more tools designed to assist those who are working collaboratively in distributed offices on the web, as well as for the development and testing of mobile applications. Adobe CS4 is scheduled to be released next month to the public.

Adobe CS4 is priced in distribution packages ranging from $999 to $2499. Full details on the release can be found on the Adobe website.

Adobe Flash:

The beta version of Flash Player 10, code-named “Astro,” has been released, and with CS4 you can now combine integrated filter effects from AfterEffects, 3-D design that is synched with new features in Photoshop, and advanced text editing that comes from InDesign. The new version routes more processing to the PC’s video card to increase performance and provide better display of graphics, 3-D, and video. There are also features which allow for sound mixing in ActionScript applications and audio filtering.

Adobe AIR:

Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) was released earlier this year, allowing developers to code standalone desktop and rich internet applications that deploy across multiple browsers and operating systems fusing HTML, JavaScript, ActionScript, Flash, and other languages in a single framework. Adobe’s main focus in cloud computing, the applications have the advantage of being able to be saved locally and run even when the computer is not connected to the internet. The platform uses digital signatures to protect users from harmful code. The SDK is free.

Adobe Flex:

The Flex SDK is one of Adobe’s main Open Source offerings, “a highly productive, open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops and operating systems. It provides a modern, standards-based language and programming model that supports common design patterns suitable for developers from many backgrounds. Flex applications run in the ubiquitous Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe® AIR™.”

Adobe Tamarin:

Adobe developed Tamarin as an ActionScript / JavaScript compiler and virtual machine for Flash 9, and then released the entire code base under an Open Source license to the Mozilla / Firefox project. According to the Tamarin project page:

“The goal of the ‘Tamarin’ project is to implement a high-performance, open source implementation of the ECMAScript 4th edition (ES4) language specification. The Tamarin virtual machine will be used by Mozilla within SpiderMonkey, the core JavaScript engine embedded in Firefox®, and other products based on Mozilla technology. The code will continue to be used by Adobe as part of the ActionScript™ Virtual Machine within Adobe® Flash® Player.”

Adobe Thermo:

From the Interview with Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO:

“We’re also working on a new project that’s code-named Thermo. And Thermo is a way to enable designers to build rich Internet applications… So with Thermo we’re enabling you to take your visual assets that you’ve drawn in a creative tool like Photoshop and you can actually select the items that you drew in Photoshop and you can turn them into interactive items just by clicking on an item and saying ‘make this a button’ or ‘make this a scroll bar.’ And it will take the illustration and turn it into a working component. That’s really incredible. And it’s a huge innovation to enable designers to create the interactivity and the logic of the application by converting their artwork into components and then wiring them together. And you’re able to connect those components through drag-and-drop. So without writing any code, you’re able to create the interactivity of your application.”
